Becoming a Firewise community is easier than most people think — and it makes a big difference in protecting homes and neighbors from wildfire.

Firewise USA® is a national, volunteer-based program that helps neighbors work together to reduce wildfire risks. The best part? It’s simple and flexible.

To qualify each year, your neighborhood only needs to complete efforts, such as:

  • Complete the equivalent of 1 hour of wildfire risk-reduction work per household (like yard cleanup, trimming vegetation, or other home hardening projects – projects you’re already working on your home); or
  • Spend about $40 per household annually on yard or landscaping maintenance that reduces wildfire risk; or
  • Host or attend one educational meeting on emergency preparedness or home hardening.

That’s it!

Small, manageable actions — like clearing leaves from gutters, trimming trees away from homes, or replacing flammable plants — add up to meaningful protection. When neighbors participate together, it strengthens the whole community. The best part is you may qualify for insurance recognition and discounts!

Fire Safe Marin and City of San Rafael Fire Department staff will mentor and help you create your neighborhood Firewise plan.
